TSCO's Comparable Sales and Growth Drivers

Comps increased 0.4% compared with 3.9% growth in the year-ago quarter. The increase reflected a 0.7% rise in comparable average transaction value, partly offset by a 0.3% decline in transaction count. Average transaction value reached $59.8 compared with $59.5 a year ago. Our model had forecast comparable average transaction growth of 0.4% for the third quarter.

Comps improved sequentially throughout the quarter, moving from negative territory in July to modest growth in August and further strengthening in September. Seasonal categories, including wildlife supplies, equine and livestock products, and truck, tool and hardware merchandise, performed well.

The company's consumable, usable and edible categories performed well, while digital sales registered double-digit growth. However, weakness persisted in big-ticket merchandise and companion animal categories. Although companion animal sales remained below the company average, performance trends have improved steadily since the previous quarter.

Tractor Supply's Margins and Operating Costs

Gross profit increased 2.6% year over year to $1.4 billion. However, gross margin contracted 100 basis points (bps) from the prior-year quarter to 36.4%. Higher transportation and fuel expenses, alongside incremental investments to strengthen the company's price-value positioning, weighed on profitability. Our model had expected adjusted gross profit to rise 0.4% year over year while adjusted gross margin contracted 90 bps for the third quarter.

Selling, general and administrative (SG&A) expenses, including depreciation and amortization, increased 6.8% year over year to $1.1 billion. As a percentage of sales, SG&A expenses expanded 50 bps to 28.6%. The increase primarily reflected deleverage associated with weaker comps growth and startup expenses related to the new distribution center. Disciplined expense management partially mitigated these pressures.

Operating income declined 10.2% year over year to $307.7 million. The operating margin contracted 130 bps year over year to 7.9%, reflecting gross margin pressure and increased operating expenses. We had anticipated adjusted operating income to decrease 17.5% year over year and adjusted operating margin contraction of 180 bps for the third quarter.

Tractor Supply's Financial Health and Store Expansion

Tractor Supply ended the quarter with cash and cash equivalents of $198.9 million, long-term debt of $2.2 billion and stockholders' equity of $2.7 billion. Inventories totaled $3.6 billion.

During the first nine months of 2026, net cash provided by operating activities totaled $882.6 million compared with $1.3 billion in the year-ago period. Capital expenditures amounted to $651.6 million compared with $629.2 million.

The company returned $213.4 million to shareholders during the quarter, comprising share repurchases of roughly 2.7 million shares for $88.5 million and cash dividends of $124.9 million.

Tractor Supply opened 23 stores and closed 74 Petsense locations during the quarter. It ended the period with 2,486 Tractor Supply stores and 135 Petsense stores, bringing its consolidated store count to 2,621.

TSCO Reaffirms 2026 Outlook

Management reaffirmed its 2026 guidance, projecting net sales growth of 2.5-3.5%. Comparable-store sales are expected to range from a 1% decline to flat performance.

The company anticipates an operating margin of 8-8.3%, with the adjusted operating margin expected between 8.5% and 8.8%. Reported net income is projected at $930-$990 million, while adjusted net income is forecast between $990 million and $1.05 billion.

Reported earnings are expected between $1.78 and $1.88 per share, while adjusted earnings are projected at $1.90-$2 per share.

Management remains focused on accelerating comps growth, improving productivity and restoring operating margins.
